Should your DJ be skilled at beat mixing?

What is that you say?

It is a skill that requires 2 songs (or more) to be able to be heard at the same time without breaking the tempo or beat. Imagine dancing to one of your favorite songs and then be interrupted to a second song that is either too fast or too slow to the one that you were dancing to.

Beat mixing is an art. And some DJ's not only blend the songs they get very creative where they can change to another gender keeping the same tempo. Mixing from Bachata to a Merengue or a Dance song without missing a beat. It sounds impossible but it is true. In NYC you hear most of the Latin broadcasting stations having this type of mixing and people tune in every day.

When it comes to your wedding reception, you should have a DJ that possesses those skills because at one point in the event there will be plenty of time for dancing and the music should be evenly blended. Transitions from one gender of music to another and giving everyone a chance to dance is key. If your DJ just waits from one song to finish and plays the next one, he/she lacks talent and in all truthfulness, he's NOT a DJ. He's very close to having and Ipod  or Jukebox wedding if you will. Ipod wedding in our book is extremely NOT recommended.

You should make this one factor when choosing your wedding DJ. If you are from New York City, a DJ that cannot mix music, that will not cut the mustard.  LOL

Your comments are welcome.

Ask your older relatives if they remember what an LP was (or sometimes called vinyl) or an 8-track? Do you remember the cassette or CD? Years ago, and for some, not too long ago it was a medium to obtain music. You would visit, yes visit, the record store, not go on-line to buy your music and purchase the music. Today, DJs get into the business everyday by downloading file sharing music; but is this a legitimate way to start any business by obtaining music he never owned?

I've mentioned before you should have a legitimate medium to obtain music. Now a day, who hasn't downloaded or share a music file but you can't just download all your music and call yourself a DJ.

Mistake from some of us to hire the beginner, novice and cheap DJ is because they have very little overhead and the price seems right at the time. However, if you try to hire them for your wedding receptions will they have music that are "Radio" or "Clean" version of your favorite songs? Most likely the answer is no; because most of the songs with explicit content are the first ones to be available on file sharing websites. Yes, your DJ has the latest and up to date song but what is the use of playing it if he/she will be offending your guests? It's a wedding reception not a club.

Season veterans in the wedding DJ industry will and should be able to prove to you that not all of the music they have on their computer is downloaded illegally. Simply ask.

Soon I will touch on topic such as: if your DJ should be skilled at beat mixing, should he/she have good microphone skills, should he have lighting, insurance, how much time should your DJ prepare for your event, should DJ's take requests, how much should your DJ charge and is it easy to do a wedding reception?

If you have any topics or suggestions feel free to post your inquiry. Please do not post for an actual quote. Quotes will only be handled in person (I have a posting for the "why"; take the time to read it).

Wow! The short answer to the question is NO.

The explanation:

We have attended too many events or parties and will be too detailed.

When I planned my wedding, my soon to be wife had also attended to too many events (working with me) and it was tough not to try to turn every stone. We did have a succesful wedding reception and day, but it did come with some stress due to the fact that we didn't want this or that that we had seen at previous wedding receptions. Yes, we are experts but ever heard too much input or information overload? That is the same things as getting in one room either lawyers, doctors or any other group of people that have a specialty. We DJ's are no different.

By the same token, planning my daughter Sweet 16 was also day that took a toll. My company did the event and it was very succesfull but it was also a lot of work. I took all the bells and whistles and took 5 of us to work the event. Between the music, lighting, up-lights, projections screen and presentation it took a lot of work. Why I didn't hire someone to do the party for me? Because I wanted the best for my daughter and I did just that. :-)

We understand your frustrations when you come to us and we are here to provide solutions and make sure you have a great time and not worry about a thing. Leave it to the professionals and enjoy your day.

How do you envision your guest at your wedding? Sitting, talking, just holding up the walls or dancing. Most of us would pick dancing. What would it take to take them there? Would it be the right or best venue, time of the day that your event takes place, music played during your event or the entertainer to make those feet tap and then head to the dance floor? All of the above is correct.

Most of the time, if you have a nice venue and you schedule your wedding on a Saturday night, you have a good combination that your guest will be having a blast and not hold back. The added bonus would be to pick the right wedding entertainer. In an American wedding, all announcement and dedications will be in English and basically no specialty songs will be needed.

When needing bilingual entertainment it changes things, especially if you are planning a wedding. The best way to hire him or her is to interview them personally. All decision making people should be present so you all get a chance to know who will be the right entertainer and who will make the best representation of you. The last call I got was for an Indian Bride with a Dominican Groom. What matter most to them was that the DJ entertainer was versed in both English and Spanish; not so much the music because that can be worked out with a list of songs or if the DJ had this or that piece of equipment. If you need for both sides of the family to be on the same page and happy a bilingual DJ entertainer will be the appropriate person for the job.

We like to have fun and classy wedding receptions. We believe that all people do like "to party" and deserve a chance to get on that dance floor. Here at Rhythm N Ritmo we will provide that as part of our services to you. We will make the proper music selections (based on your music list and input) and make the proper announcements with good taste. There is nothing worse than a person who is constantly on the microphone or who does not make the announcements without offending your guests. We are THE latin bilingual wedding specialist, offering our services for NYC and the rest of the tri-state area.

P.S. Just because I mentioned a Saturday night wedding it does not mean if your wedding is any other day it will not be succesful. You can actually save yourself some money by scheduling your wedding on a Thursday, Friday or Sunday.

As always, your comments are welcomed. :-)

DJs come in all different personalities, ethnicities, experience and the list can go on and on. What is the DJ that will fit the bill you are looking for?

Would a DJ who says "DJ for all occasions" be ok for your event? When you look for a mechanic or a doctor, would it be a better choice to have a specialist in their trade or just a general, change your tire or oil or "take 2 of these and call me in the morning" type of guy? Point in case is that when researching for a DJ this too should be considered. Most DJ's began their careers as music playing individuals who later mastered a skill to create music blending or having enough years in the business to know the type of music your Parents or Ant's like to listen to.

How about if you need a DJ that not only knows how to play music but that is versed in more than one language or nationality? In case of Latin DJs, if you can hire a DJ that has "Suavemente" by Elvis Crespo in his music library, would that suffice? Not knocking the song but simply put, if all you need is 1 or 2 songs of Latin music for your event, then maybe he/she may do. If by chance you are having a reception with more than 1/3 of your guest are Latino, it may be wiser to look for a Latin DJ. This individual should not only carry Latin music but also you favorites in English too. If you live in New York City, you know this is the melting pot of the world and as a DJ you must also carry the Cronies, Sock hop, Motown and a little Rock N Roll, all the way up to today's Top 40's.

Other factor would be if the DJ is a wedding DJ, Club DJ or Radio DJ. They (the DJ's) can all play music but there are certain things that do not happen during a night out at the club or during the radio program that will need to be taken care of if you are the DJ at a wedding. Coordination and collaboration with the venue's staff, photographer, videographer and any other wedding professional is a must. For instance, the grand entrance does not begin unless all wedding professionals are on the same page and ready to start at the same time. We all must do our part. Other examples would be the first dance, the parent dance(s), cake cutting, garter, bouquet, etc.

We at Rhythm N Ritmo are specialist in Latin bilingual weddings. Although we believe we can perform (yes, believe it or not, it is a performance) at any social gathering but we shine at wedding events (yes, it's an event, not a gig or any party). We all want the best when we are looking to purchase goods and/or services. You should meet your wedding DJ in person and don't shop by phone. You want to get a good vive and feel confident that your DJ will deliver. If you would like us to give you an idea of what Rhythm N Ritmo, your Latin Wedding Specialists, can do at your event, call us to set up your FREE consultation. We welcome your feedback or questions.

If it looks like a duck, and quacks like a duck then it's a duck.

Is every celebration party (birthday, anniversary, wedding) the same? There are common factors to these types of parties:

-          You invite close friends and family

-          You get a venue

-          You hire professionals to do flowers, pictures, video and music

When does planning and coordination take place to have a great celebration?

Birthday's  are an exciting time when someone reaches a milestone. We have drinks, friends and family to join us. If you are in the mood to splurge a little you go with a catering venue where most likely you will opt for a buffet style meal and enjoy the rest of the event dancing and enjoying the event.

Anniversaries are also exciting and a milestone when a couples reach a certain number of years married. Most of the time we have the Silver or 25th wedding anniversary and the Gold or 50th wedding anniversary.  Again, we have drinks, friends and family to join us. If you are in the mood to splurge a little you go with a catering venue where most likely you will opt between a sit down dinner or a buffet style meal. The rest of the event is dedicated to dancing and enjoying the event.

At each of the above celebrations you can hire a local DJ for a couple of hundred dollars for the night and have a great time.

Weddings are the most elaborate and detail oriented events where planning and coordination are a must. Without mentioning the "bridezilla" factor, for every bride this is a dream come true and things have to be done a certain way for this is their day. Each vendor/person has to be on their "A" game.  Most professional  vendors, starting from the catering hall, to the florist, photographer, videographer and DJ have look at their itinerary and wedding  plan for your day.  They show up and are ready to execute all your wishes and desires.

Most of the guest will show up and you will have a great time! Most of the guests have no idea how much time has been spent on the details that each professional that you hired excecute. This is the part that most people miss and will not take into consideration until they have to experience it on their own. To make it a memorable and exiting event, all vendors have to work together. It's a team effort.

Before any guest or celebrant walks into a venue all of your professional vendors have arrived anywhere from 1 to 4 hours prior to your event. The more options or add-ons you have requested the more time, personnel and equipment has been put in place.  Price wise, would you think that a more elaborate event would cost more money than a simple event? Of course! So the answer is YES.

Word to the wise, most professional that you will hire have packages that are ideal to what your wedding reception will need. You must know that the more options or add-on's you want the more the final cost will be.

From a small intimate birthday or anniversary to a wedding there is a big difference on the time spent to organize and coordinate and a bigger budget is called for.

Do not try to pretend that you are having an anniversary and actually plan a wedding. Most venues and professional will catch on quickly and will not have to honor all the details for services that you did not pay for.  The picture may look the same, "it's just a party" but the reality to get the excellent and thrill of a life time wedding, there is much more to what we superficially see.

As a small example, you have to prepare music for your cocktail hour, line up the bridal party, introduction of the bridal party, cordinate first dance, parent dances, cake, garder and boquet and the list goes on and on. All of the preparation gets taken care of behind the scene.

So a wedding is much more than a party it's a coordinated and elaborate celebration.

Have a comment? Feel free to write us.

Why you should only do business with a vendor that provides a contract?

A contract provides protection for you and your vendor. Both parties know what they are responsible for. In the event that any party does not hold their part you have a way to take them to court and get some type of compensation.

Weddings are exiting and stressful to plan for. You have all these details and vendors to deal with. Do not have your event ruined by not following what your vendor contract states. The day of the event is not a time or place to negotiate anything. If there is a balance due, you cannot get upset with your vendor for wanting to get paid. You had agreed to the terms of the contract way in advance. Caterers (venues) usually collect their monies a few days or weeks in advance but some mobile services will collect the day of the event. For this type of vendor once the event is over there is nothing to provide the recently married couple and should a money dispute come up, they have nothing to stand on. The food has already been served for a caterer. The same goes for the DJ, once the event is over, they have no post-production material to turn over, unlike the photo or video service.

Any vendor in the wedding business does not want to ruin your event for monies and balances due; nor does he/she want to hold your event hostage. For the most part, this is the first time you are dealing with this vendor so it is undestandable that there is a "trust" issue; yes we do know that. Will the vendor show up is one of the primary concerns. But if your vendor shows on time and provides the service(s) agreed to, you should not have any problems adhering to the term to pay him or her.

Most mobile service(s) are preparing way in advance into the day. A 5 hour event can actually take at least 10 hours from the first piece of equipment gets loaded into a truck to the last piece that is taken off the same truck once the event is over.

All vendors are there to provide a service and to build a relationship and hopefully to get referals from you. So lets all have a good time but take care of business before we start.
